  • Graunching noise from front off side!

    Hi all,
Just fitted new front discs & pads & rear shoes to my 3.0 2nd Gen.
All went according to plan with no obvious problems.
Took the Surf out for a test run, to help bed in and fine adjust etc.
I now have what I can only describe as a 'graunching' sound from FOS.
The noise is not continuous but is related to the revolutions of the wheel.
i.e. The faster I go the more frequent the noise.
Every revolution of the wheel gives off this same noise.

I have stripped it all back again to recheck everything and all appears to be fine. I did not have this noise before doing this work.

I do have 2 ideas of my own left but, thought I'd throw it open to the more experienced members of the forum.

Just need to add this bit: The noise is very loud and people on the street turn & stare. I estimate that the noise lasts for about 1/3 of each revolution of the wheel.

    Any suggestions?

    Regards
    Tony

First thing I'd look at would be the power steering belt, as it's doing it with the steering
    Gone from 4x4 to 1x2

Brand new discs and as far as I can see are completely flat. Pads are a bit rough though on that side considering they have only just been fitted.
          Must take another look.

Might be worth pulling out the pads again to make sure there is no debris stuck in the pad.

Check you have'nt slightly bent the back plate behind the disc. Jack it up spin the wheel and see if it touches the disc anywhere.

Got to take it apart again so I will check them.
                      Deosn't sound like pads though.

                      Very embarassing!

                          Hi,
No it doesn't. It's there all the time and audible from around 5mph.

                            Stripped down again.

Having stripped it all down again, I re-checked the disc with a straight edge. Seems ok. Bearings are both fine.
I'm looking at the 'new' brake pads now.
Considering they have only done about 4 miles, they have a lot of shiny very hard build-up and not even across the face either. I'm wondering if the pads are rubbish and/or there is a problem with the disc.

Might just replace the whole shooting match and be done with it, though it's a bit annoying when some of these parts are supposed to be new anyway.

Regards and thanks to all suggestions. It has helped.

                              Pads

My wifes car made a horrible noise like this. people could hear you coming and heads would turn. If you applied the brakes hard it would go away for a couple of miles then come back again. I thought it was the discs, then I thought something was trapped beteen the discs and the pads and that braking hard was pushing the trapped object into the pad causing the noise to temporarily disapear. Turned out to just be the pads, new ones cured it.
In space no one can hear you scream
