  • Ball Joint Grease

Need a little wisdom here, my dad has given me some grease he thinks should be ok on the ball joints (haven't done it yet and not sure when they were last done, if at all), now reading the sticky section it says to use Molydbenum-disulfide lithium based grease NLGI 1 or 2. The grease he has given says it's lithium based and meets NLGI 2 and is ideal for use on pump bearings, universal joints, wheel bearings, vehicle chassis and other routine maintenance but mentions nothing about the Molydbenum-disulfide, it also says it has a high melting point and is multi purpose, since I don't have a clue what all the names and numbers mean, would this be ok to use on the ball joints???
Any help on this would be MUCH appreciated.

They're sometimes not fitted, but there will be a plug in the BJ so that a nipple can be retro-fitted if there is room.

What colour is the grease? I wouldn't use grease without the molydbenum-disulfide component in it for ball joints. The grease you have sounds ok for bearings etc.

None according to the EPC and no plug as on the second generation that you can replace with a grease nipple, that I can see either.

Have been out to take a look (along with other jobs to be done), Nev, you are right, it would appear that the 3rd gen doesn't have anywhere to put the nipple in so no greasing needed (or possible), least ways on mine, so when they go thats it, there doesn't appear to be any way of performing routine maintenance on them. Still, at least I've got some general purpose grease to use on other bits and peices and one less routine maintenance bit to sort now.
Cheers for everybody's help and comments.

Sorry, didn't notice this was a 3rd gen thing. As for BJ nipples, all 4 of mine have them, as do 2 of the TREs, the 2 TREs that don't, have removable plugs.

No problem mate, just having a day of doing bits and pieces to the surf, that's one job I didn't have to sort in the end thankfully.

both of my 2nd gens, had either nipples or plugs fitted as above. Where they had plugs only I removed said plug and fitted nipples, but as Nev says the option is not there on the 3rd gen. I looked hard enough, and wondered if perhaps another good looking at was in order when I saw this post. It appears not however. I suppose Tojo never expected a 3rd gen owner to want to get his hands dirty with anything other than hair dye

For anyone finding this thread in a search, Ernest Doe were the only people I could find who sell moly grease in a cartridge for the grease guns (I'm crap at filling grease guns from pots)

It was Rembrandt Moly grease btw.
