  • Clang noise when driving over bumps

Im getting a clang noise when driving over bumps like drains etc in the road. I spoke to a guy at Rough Trax (www.toyotahilux.com) and he said its the drive shaft.

Drive shaft is more likely to give you vibes and noises when driving along, I'd be looking for loose/knackered shocks, all axle mounting points, anti roll bars, loose exhaust, etc, etc. Surfs sometimes have rattley front drive shafts, try it 4wd (in a straight line ) and see if it goes away.

Just began 2 get similar clanking noise...had good look underneath and found roll bar mount on axle had broken. See Pic

as 1 had gone thought id replace both at the same time aswell as new rubbers...if 1 had gone the other wont be far behind.
took 2day for toyota 2 get in stock but easy to change. £17 for two brackets and £13 for two new rubbers

              Things that go bump........

I also had the same problems with noises going over bumps, coming from the front end of my surf. In the end I found it was all 4 rubber damping plates on the front supension arms that were loose, once these were tightened back all was fine, suggest you take a look at these as well.

have the exact same noise on our surf. When you put it in 4x4 the noise stops. ours is the shaft moving in the transfer box. When I had the front diff out for a new seal couldn't see any damage but there is only a spring circlip holding the shaft in place. This does have some movement (not sure if it should but didn't look bad to me).

If anyone finds a cure I'd be interested as its a bit crap having a cool truck that sounds like a loose drain cover when crusing down the pub!

Only cure I know is to shut windows or turn stereo up!!

I have a 92 Surf. I get a real crunchy sound from the front when applying full lock to the steering, more so if going over a bump. Sounds really awful and always makes people look. had a good look underneath but cannot see anything obvious. Anybody got any ideas. I need an MOT so rather desparate to get it sorted.

Grease your bump stops that should cure it.
