  • Spongey brake pedal!!!

    Hi all,
I've just changed my front pads and now the pedal feels spongey. All I did was push the pistons back to allow for the new pads. Anyone had this before? Any other ideas before I bleed them?
    Anything would be useful, ta.

Errrrrm, you need to bleed them because you will probably have air in the system when you pushed the piston back.

You will have to do both front & rear.

    Read post 10.

Thanks mate. I've got to do the rear brakes today anyway, so looks like I'm bleeding them too

Theres no need to bleed them, nothing you did should have got air in the system, but at the same time no harm. That spongy feel is normal when you fit new pads. It takes a few applications to bed them in. Right now your pads probably only have contact with about 50% of their surface. Discs may feel smooth but in reality they have hundreds of tiny grooves and ridges. A few miles and a few brake applications and they will be fine. All nicely bedded in and most of the surface area in contact.

Thanks Bogus, and I thought the same. I've never had to bleed the brakes on any car after just changing the pads, however, I bled them today (anyway), with a little help from my son, and now the pedal is rock hard again!
Didn't change the rear shoes after all coz they have loads of life left, just cleaned the drums and replaced.

Thanks to all for your help.
