  • hilux surf newbie a few questions???

hi there i'm new to all this mallarky so please forgive the ignorance,
i brought a 93 2.4td ssrx the other day yay!! its ###### cool, but have a few quibbles on it. first off the auto box has a little lag when i pull away hard, it feels and sounds like a slipping clutch on a manual car but its an auto so why would it do it, is it supposed to do it, is there anything wrong with it. how do you test an auto box for soundness. it drives and changes gear properly but the revs go up and then settle after the change up.

secondly is it ok to leave the thing in drive when your at lights or in traffic does it cause wear on the gear box and or all other associated gubbins.

    thanks all for any help.

I'm new to the autobox scene so to speak so still learning but first off would check the transmission fluid level (while the engine's running) as for leaving it in D, I just go by the time it takes the lights to change, I know most of them round our way so if I know their a short change light I'll leave it in Drive, if I know it takes a while I'll just pop it into Neutral and chuck the handbrake on, pretty much the same as a manual vehicle really, I've certainly had no ill effects so far.

There's nothing wrong with your gearbox and it's ok to leave it in drive when stopped for short periods.

Check your ATF (Auto Transmission Fluid), an auto should not hesitate then move when the accelerator is depressed.
You need to check it when its warmed up, and with the engine running.

thanks all, but the plot thickens!!

thanks for replies folks, I dropped the car in at a garage today the guy seemed to think there may be a problem with the pressure sensor, which has something to do with gear selection, also connects to a control box of some type, Are ya loving my terminology yet?? anywho does this sound feesable to anyone, the car does not seem to be running properly and the over revving does seem to be getting worse, but i'm all spent up and really need to have some kind of idea before sending it to a man who may quite easily have me over in a pants down position very quickly. he was sounding very expensive, but knowledgable too which is a worry.

I know an online cure is hard to find but to know the guy could be close to the mark is good enough for me, an you lot do seemto be quite good at fixing dodgy little faults like mine so again any help greatly appreciated.

You'd be best doing as BPS suggested and concentrating on the fluid first. For the sake of £15 and a hour or so of work, it's an easy point to eliminate.

well err it connects to the transmision it is found under/engine side of the oil sump apparently. controls the pressure in the gear box and so i was told if it is not sending properly then the gear does not fully sellect which then makes it slip the gear a bit? in idiot terms any way probably lots harder than that really. the dude did have that "talking to a 5 yr old" tone

Talking bullsh1t tone would be a closer comparison.

Torque, not talk! No, there is no pressure sensor in the torque converter.
