  • Changing tailgate window motor

Okay, I've read all the posts on tailgate / rear window problems, but cannot find the answer to my own little headache so can anyone out there help.

Situation is rear window stopped moving half way up this afternoon. Trying on the key I can hear the motor working, both up and down, but no window movement - so first assumption is the gearbox on the motor has shed a few teeth.

I've taken the carpet panel off the inside of the tailgate, and the metal trim cover and it's plastic undersheet, and can see the mechanism and the motor / gear assembly. I've found a replacement motor / gear box at rough trax (£140 - is there anywhere better / cheaper you can recomend ??) and am all set to change them over.

Problem is - how does the motor / gearbox assembly come out ? I've read of other posts describing undoing three bolts to remove the motor - there are three on mine but they are on the inside (ie facing into the tailgate cavity. The only way I can get to these bolts would appear to be to remove the four bolts securing the whole window mechanism, and removing the entire thing - latch and lock connecting rods, all the electrics etc - and before I can do that I'm going to need to detach or remove the glass itself from the mechanism, which seems an awfully complicated process to change the motor....

So gentlemen (and ladies), any helpful suggestions would be mighty welcome......

Once you've taken the carpet /blk metal cover / plastic sheet off, next remove the bolts from the metal frame (the part holding everything in)
then you can lift/manouvre it (without having to take it out) and get your hand in with a small spanner to do the motor!
It's not easy and it'll scrape your knuckles!!
    Good luck

            Hi, mate,

When I changed my motor out did it from inside with
the window in the raised position there's much more room,
or you can manualy lock the tailgate in the open position
and do it, but you will need a helper to support the glass.
            BTW it's a 8mm spanner you need.
            Hope this helps.

            Gman.
If it aint broke, keep goin' till it is.

If you take the bolts out of the runner mechanism you can ease it all out enough to make the motor bolts much easier to get to.

Thanks to all - and here's a couple of extra tips....

Thanks folks for those various words of wisdom. Replacement motor went in yesterday and now window is breaking land-speed records in its vertical ascent...

A few pointers that might be useful for anyone else doing this job

1 - I managed to get the old motor out and the new one in without undoing the four bolts holding the main assembly in place by using a cranked-end 8 mm ring spanner and putting my hand through the aperture on the right hand side of the motor. Fairly easy but you ARE gonna scratch your wrists

2 - If the window stops moving suddenly but you can still hear the motor /gear running (as mine did) Its worth checking the motor before you buy a new one. Take the motor out, and carefully prise the silver metal cover off the circular gear case. Inside you will find a drive gear which meshes with the worm gear in the motor, within which sits a hard rubber disk with a spindle which locks to the small outer gear to the window quadrants. This lot is held together with a single small 15mm diameter circlip. On mine it was the circlip that had failed - so you may find a quick and easy remedy without having to go to the expense of whole new motor.

Having said that the rest of mine was in pretty old and rough condition due to water ingress and well worthy of replacement so thanks to Stormforce for the part !!

Any Surfers on the Isle of Man with the same problem drop me a line - happy to help if I can.

I used an 8mm ratchet spanner, pretty easy.
