  • Binding rear brake one side only

This is starting to be a pain to solve.

All linkages are free, the auto adjuster is moving as it should, everything in the hub is clean and as it should be, on the rear of the hub the pivot bracket is releasing fully, I have backed off the balancing bolts on the problem side and it has the full releasing distance to it's self.

Now I back off the auto adjuster refit the hud and it runs freely, pull on and off the hand brake to make the auto adjuster work and I'm left with a binding brake again.

Tried filing off the leading edges of the shoes, removing any step in the hub although there was very little to remove if any, giving the shoes and hubs a good rub over with sand paper but I still have not solved this.

Could the hubs be not round inside?

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks for your thoughts?

Rear is jacked on the diff (so normal road going height) when hand brake is released one side has resistance and one side does not, I'm only talking about a little difference in resistance, it does spin but stops quickly it was enough for an keen MOT guy to pickup on though

It's not the handbrake cable or adjustment because I have slacken these off and the pivot bracket on the back plate is fully going back..........it's a bit of a mystery

I will check if the shoes are some how catching on the back plate and not releasing equally because I think that would explain it maybe

      Thanks for the ideas.

sticky piston in brake cylinder would be my guess.

I had a similar problem with one of my rear drums. After many strip downs/build ups - I noticed that the pivot pin on the top of front shoe which connects the self adjuster mechanism was slightly loose in its hole. This pin is a press fit on splines into the shoe and had worn loose somehow.
The effect of this play was the self adjuster would over compensate and bind slightly over a few days.
Maybe worth a look at your pin on the offending side.
If anybody has a pic of the brake internals I can identify the correct location of the pin if you like??
