Front Diff

Whilst refitting my gearbox on Saturday, I noticed that whilst turning the front prop shaft the front drive shafts did not turn. Is that normal? I assumed the transfer box is what engaged the 4 wheel drive. Is that correct or is it the electrical bit on the front diff that I thought was the speedo sensor?

Just concerned that my front diff might have it's guts missing.

it'll spin, cos the ADD is disconnected, so normally that side of the diff will spin and not the short side drive shaft and wheel.
