  • 31's to 33's without a re-gear on an LN130 2.4TD?

Is it really going to kill my acceleration totally? There have been mixed reviews all over the net.

Suspension / body lift is not an issue as I made my own body lift kit and raised the suspension already so it's literally a gearing enquiry and I know my speedo will be out, in fact, it's already out. I think mine had 30's when new and with 31's (as I bought it) it's not right and gradually get worse the faster you go, as you would expect.

If I needed to re-gear, where would I get the gearing components?

I am doing more long journey's and wondered if I should just leave it so I get better mpg / less noise at motorway speeds because it's never going to wow me on the 0-60 speed anyway!

    Thanks,

    Ray.

You wont get better mpg. You're turning much more weight with bigger tyres.

Acceleration with a 2.4? Dunno really, but you notice it on a 3.0. It's not dreadful, but its noticeable.

Incidentally, my speedo is on the nail on 33s, according to my GPS.

So when you fitted 33's did you re-gear or not? If I can't go to 33's due to the power loss then I won't bother with the body lift as I don't need it so the whole things hangs in the balance as I have no idea where to get it re-geared or how much it would cost.

      Thanks,

      Ray.

You will notice the difference on 33's with a 2.4 but once you get to top gear its not to bad.I drove 320 home in a 2.4 on 33's and it wasn't 2 bad on fuel either

depends what gears you have to start with, if it had 4.88 from the factory, you'll not notice much difference (in fact 4.8 is what we fitted to Linda truck with 33's, from 4.1), but if it has 4.5's or even 4.1's you'll notice a difference in performance on 33's.

It's not that it kills the acceration so much, its more then it gets annoying on long hills on hte motorway, and it bogs down and won't accelerate when trying to overtake. you end up having to leave it in 2 or or planting throttle for long periods and then MPG sucks.

if you drive at legal speeds, and don't have to rush, you can live with it.

            My two pence...

For what it`s worth, I`m driving a LN130L 3.0L and BFG A/T 33s; I find the acceleration is good, although not awe-inspiring, without flooring it, provided I let the turbo spool up a bit. I should point out that I never go over 60Mph though and have never driven it with any other tyre size.

I get about 350 miles to a tank so far but hoping to improve it a bit with experience.

            Cheers,
            Jon

OK, just to update you guys with some more info I have checked my diff code and it's G255 so 8", 4.56 ratio with 4 pinion LSD.

That'll be why my speedo is out as most people I know who have a the correct speed on their speedo is running a 4.88 ratio and 31's (I think).

Is there anyone out there running 33's on a 4.56 ratio with a 2.4 manual? It's not that I doubt the expertise of the gurus here but I need a solid answer as I don't want to go to the hassle of doing a body lift and spend the cash on the tyres only to find I can't drive anywhere!

              Thanks in advance,

              Ray.

You've been given a 'solid' answer above. You apparently are doubting the advice you've been given, btw.

Must've missed it, I'm using my mobile at the moment.
It's a big investment and I wanted to be dead sure about it and thought I'd add the extra info in case it would change anyone's opinion once they had all of the facts and weren't assuming anything about my vehicle.

                  Thanks,

                  Ray.

Your gearing ain't optimal, as mentioned above. Worst case scenario, if you can't live with the difference 33's make, get onto one of the breakers and get the gubbins to change it to the 4.88 ratio.

PM Rodleach if you want more info than you can shake a stick at. He delved more into that area than most before he flogged his Surf.

I ran 33s on my old 2.4 manual
Not sure which gear ratio I had

                      Its like Tony N said

I haven't noticed too much of a lag on my 2.4 manual on 33's. As someone said before, I'm also getting around 350 / 370 on a tank at 60-70mph motorway driving. Acceleration isn't amazing, but isn't terrible either. Hills require some high revs. Saying that, don't know what the ratio is!? Go hard, buddy, it's worth it for the looks you get and the kids pointing! (although that may just be my haircut )
