wheels bearings loose - replace or tighten?

me again...

wheel bearings on both front wheels are loose, can these be tightened easily? or do they need replacing? - and I guess a bearing-puller is needed? - so a garage job if I don't have that tool?

Try removing, re-greasing and replacing then tighten properly. They can be adjusted and only need to be replaced if that doesn't work or they are damaged/scored.

You also don't need a puller, just a big hammer to wack the hub with to remove the cone washers and a 55mm socket to tighten the wheel bearing nuts. These can be got although they are around the 20 quid mark.

To remove the bearing cages, drift them out with a socket extension bar and then drift the new ones in with the old cages making sure they are going in straight. Grease up the new bearings well - really force the new grease into the bearings.

All up a couple of hours to do both fronts if it all goes well.

Yep you are right, 54mm harder to get hold of, 55mm works just as well because the size means that you are less likely to round off the corners anyway. I got a 55mm draper one for £17, 54mm would have cost £28 - figure that one out if you can, less metal more money.

It's 3/4 inch drive so you will need a 1/2 to 3/4 inch converter.

And you are right, Halfords will sell them when they are holding the world figure skating championship in Hell.

Mine cost me £17.00 including VAT. It's a 55mm but it works. Got it from a local tool specialist.

front bearings

does aneyone out there have an exploded view of the front wheel bearings in the hub, or a removal procedure i can follow.i have been advised on mot,that they have play in them and could do with a few tips.cheers
