  • Engine Flush

Just wanted to get everybody's opinion on this. Going to do my oil change in a day or two, and I have bought a small tin of engine flush.
However I heard a horror story about a friend of a friend of someones aunty, that after they flushed out an engine on an old car similar to mine, they got tonnes of crap out of the sump all well and good, but after that they couldnt maintain oil pressure and ended up scrapping the car after being unable to find the cause, and consequently blamed it on the flush!
Any body suffered a similar fate, or should I just crack on with the flush with fingers crossed??

Also, can anybody recommend where i can find a really thin walled socket. The guy who previously owned my truck has put odd wheel nuts on all the wheels, all of which have very small nut holes, and as a consequence i cant get near them with a socket! The closest ive got to is with a box socket for removing sparkplugs, but it doesnt have the strength to get them off!

If I ever get them off I will be looking to replace the wheels all together if anybody on here has a set for sale??

    Many thanks!

    Ed

I've never bothered flushing, purely on the principle that if it ain't broke, don't mess about.

Hopefully someone will be along soon who knows what they're talking about, so you can get a proper answer.

I have used flush once didnt make any difference but since then i never use it as a few mechanics i have spoken to dont use it due to the fact that it cleans the oil galleries and sump etc but it also flushes round shall we say more tender areas such as valve stem seals etc so as people have said on here already "dont broke dont fix" i just change my oil and filter every six months and so far so good. this might be an unfounded statment on engine flush and some chemist will probaly challenge it but this is my take on the situation as for thin walled socket cant help ----sorry

It's whichever rocks your boat. Flush or don't. Any problems it may cause usually means your engine is shagged anyhows. It may just not know it yet. Go to the Oz site and you'll see quite a few preaching the virtues of flushing. Ask most people over here and you'll hear horror stories about it.

It all seems to boil down to whether your engine is on its last legs or not to start with. If not, the flush will do no harm. If it is, you may give it that final push sooner rather than later.

I dunked a tin in mine last time I changed the oil, just because I was sick of seeing it on the shelf. I'd had the stuff for about three years. A good service and maintenance schedule will always do far more for your engines overall well being, however.

Just drain the oil while it's still hot, s'what I do, that way you'll get out most of any crap thats still in suspension. Don't burn yourself though.
Engine flush should be on the same shelf as snake oil IMO.

As others have said (and you've found yourself) sockets for removing spark plugs are your best bet. I've got the same issue on my truck, so just get yourself a decent quality plug socket and you'll bee good to go.

Engine flush - mixed opinion as always! In the past I've been advised not to use flushes on turbo'd motors - last think you want is an oil line clogged by a bit of crap that has been dislodged from somewhere else. As others have said, just drain the oil when it's good and hot.

                    Cheers...

Thanks alot for everybodys opinion, I think the safest option would be not to flush!

When i got mine i did a couple of fast changes eg change the oil then change it 2 or three weeks after along with new filter of course.

I did the same thing with mine just to make sure any cheap sh*t oil was flushed away.
