Ok, thought I'd start a new one wrt to this so it doesnt get lost in the forum....
Set Up - 1 Garage, 2 axel stands, 1 hydraulic 2 ton jack. 12 Solid Breeze blocks, 2 bits of timber, 2 Scaffolding rods, a mobile phone.
Set to it at nine am and was finished by 13.00having never dropped an axel in my life.
Right ! lets get this show on the road,,,,,,
Got under and started looking for places to fit the axel stands so that it wouldnt see saw once the rear was hanging in the air, the box section chassis right in front of the rear axel tie rods would be perfect, so I stuck a couple of the aforementioned breeze blocks under there in preparation for the fun that was about to ensue.
Got the jack under the diff, and after raising it, realised that I wouldnt get the desired clearance. Out came another pair of breeze blocks. Jack on top, and off we go again. This time, I got enuff to get the stands SAFELY underneath.
I had already loosened all the bolts for the Panhard Rod and the Shocks and the wheels just in case.... So once up, the shock bolts at the bottom came off nicely. The jack just holdfing the weight of the axel under the diff. Once shock bolts were off, I tried to lower the axel but didnt get euff drop to release the springs. Got on the phone to a mate and asked what else to undo....mate said - tie rod arms, so I did them an my word, those 16mm bolts are easy to get out. down came the axel, and out came the old springs with ease. I also undid the flexi pipe and various brake pipe retention plates to avoid and spillage or accidents with the brakes.
The new springs were marked L and R and so were inserted respectivley.
Now came the fun and games. Getting those tie rod bolts back on was a pain in the neck to say the least. took 3 men and 2 scaffolding bards to get the axel to line up and even then it wasnt easy. 1.5 hrs later - Success.
Shocks went on again and torqued it all up. Dropped the car and went for a blast - Whooo hooo Ther back end is as high as a kite, opened the tailgate which when open used to reach my groin, but now !!! reaches above my belly button and I'm 6ft.
Drive Test -
Over the speed bumps at 30 mph - Real nice. no bottoming out on the stops,
however the OT Springs are not long enuff. they will do, but get pulled to max extention over a kerb even.
Infact the springs are so stiff that its kinda bouncy on big bumps which leads me again to the shox.
When I first finished it I checked the wheel offset rear in relation to front and there was 3.0 cm. after the speed bump affair, it seemed to equal out. now you cant tell by looking.
Hope this helps someone !
