  • Cylinder Honing

    Hi

I'm going to need to hone the cylinders on my block, and was wondering what grit stones to use.

AFAK, I should use 220 for the main honing / crosshatching, then a 600 grit to get the plateau finish to reduce initial ring wear...

But this depends on the ring material. Are standard hilux rings cast iron, chrom or moly??

P.S. I'm in Pakistan, so I can't just trust the engineering shop to know - their idea of honing is to wrap a piece of emery round an old bore (with no stones)... I take it this is as bad as it sounds??

Can I use 600 emery by hand for the 'brushing' after honing (to get the plateau) in case I can't get 600 grit stones??

    Thanks

    Daniel

    Hi, mate,
Trying to make an impression on the bore will be pretty hard with paper, maybe it will rough it up enough, good luck.
The rings are cast and alloy, oil rings are alloy and compression cast,or other way around cant remember of hand.
Try using diesal or petrol to clean out those water channels, or lots of crc.
Maybe you can find a shop with a powerhone for the cylinders and a acid bath for your block.
    Best of luck mate!
