    Something taken from another forum, some of you may find it interesting, enlightening, or boring....whatever.....I think it may be useful to some.

      Thanks, just edited it to remove confusion, as the pics didn't download, and they are critical to the explaination.....it make ya wonder about the cheapo filters.

        my boy did an oil and filter change on a transit last week and said there is something rattling about inside the filter turns out it was the anti drain valve had broke ive never seen this in 25years in the trade, sorry forgot to mention it was a genuine ford motorcraft filter

          I've been saying this for yonks, but nobody ever listens. Cheap filters are cheap for good reason. Genuine Toyota, Mahle or Mann filters are the only commonly available ones I personally would touch.

            Perhaps there is someone on here with the financial wherewithall to carry out such a test on the commonly available filters for the surf.
            I have always ended up with Fram filters and Comma oil from the local factor......

              Tis interesting, and I'd be interested to know what the variation in Surf filters is. The ones I've seen have all been the same *physical* size, but that means little really.

              I remember years ago a chap in a Toyota dealer (a small one) describing in great detail why I should only use the genuine filter on my GT-Four. He was convincing too.

                As you can see by the pictures, the surface area of the filter element is almost doudle the size in the OEM filter, so it may be worth spending the little extra, especially on these older engines....

                maybe if we get time on the Wales trip, we could all bring one filter with us, and strip it when we get to camp, shouldn't take more than an hour?

                  If anyone does go down the disassembly route, be careful with the fingers. Similar to a corned beef tin.

                      I would. Plus, they're a stock filter, so you don't have the two to three day wait as for some parts. 90915-30002 is the one you want. That's the twin filter filter. About seventeen quid, (non-trade), if I remember correctly.

                            When you think about it though, it's actually not. You buy a good quality filter from a Factors and it will cost roughly the same. Plus, what is more detrimental to your engines well being other than the lubricant? Very few things can have such a catastrophic effect as dodgy lubrication can. It's a mere pittance for that peace of mind and reliability. You get back what you put in.

                              Mahle sucks ......thats cos they are the buggers making me unemployed ........ But they make genunine filters for alot of the major manufactures
