  • Can you god guys help again please

We have our old 95. 2.5TDI Hilux surf which has done us proud thus far for 3 years. And I do use the 4X4 button quite frequently as we live near mountains and rough areas.

But now some ugly little problem has raised it’s head. I have noticed recently drivers side front the whole diff area is covered with oil, I have looked and the engine block and sump area is 98% dry and clean. But, the front diff or something for some odd reason has decided it’s going drop oil around front steering bars and those little pipes and bits along with that front diff. Any ideas what it could be, is this sort of thing not uncommon and what can I expect to find when it all comes off. Also in 2 WD, is it still OK to drive for a while or should I take off the road for now? Thanks. Any ideas or experience of this sort of thing would be of help.

Is it the diff end of the driveshaft, on the drivers side? The one on the short side can fail and leak oil.

95' 2.5 Surf is a little confusing? should only be a 3.0 if its a deisel for that year i'd have thought.

      Thanks for the reply

Yes thats the one! drivers side or short side as you would say! Oil all over that area. Still drives very nice, no noise, button and 4X4 light still comes on when I push it. Even if it's not working. that not sure of! Anyway someone else decided a long time ago now to put a 2.5 land cruser engine it, I recon as the old engine was shot, and it was available. Although still crap on fuel. Have no idea how many miles it's done, just says 150k Kil on the clock. And keep on going.

      Is it dead JIM?

        is it worth it

If needs a new diff or an other, and it's hard to get one out here. Or can it be repaired? Do I give and just get another 4X4 or press on?

ok, if its the seal in the diff its not toooo bad, you need to get the drive shaft out, then the diff flange pulls out with a slide hammer or similer, then you can pull the seal/bush out of the diff and fit a new one.

Make sure its not just a split inner CV boot thats spraying grease everythere first.
