I had this problem on mine. It was two fold and pretty much what everyone else has said.

The batteries on mine were breaking down to 11.5 volts under load (Starting) This disguised the batteries being at fault as all of the lights, etc worked fine. I replaced the batteries and this improved it but the starting was still lazy.

I took the starter out (Bitch of a job on the 3.0 I am afraid) and the contacts on the original solenoids wear out (Through arcing) on one side as they are not man enough for the job. The replacement contacts from Toyota are noticeably bigger and the Surf now turns over like it has no compression!

One thing that I did notice with the duff batt's is that it would wind over a few times before starting, now it starts as soon as you turn the key.

    Hope this helps

    Rich.

Hello . Well they changed the relay, but before they did it was starting fine, and has since the changed relay, it first happend on a damp morning so the next damp morning should tell.
Spoke to the garage yesterday and after looking at the diagrams of the starter and solenoids that I showed him, he says if it happens again he will take the starter out to check it.
Also my batteries are showing that they are working fine on the battery metor on the dash.
      Will keep yous informed.
      Cheers Kevin.

They will have to get them from Toyota. They will need to phone them with the Frame Number and Engine Number from the info plate. They will then be able to get the exact parts for your motor.
