  • 3rd Gen Lower Balljoint - Needs Replacing - What Do I Need

i have steering wheel wobble on my 3rd gen and i just replaced the worn steering rack bushes thinking it was them but the steering wheel is still wobbling usually when braking, the brake discs look true to me, i found play in the drivers side lower balljoint so im thinking this may be the cause.

if i am to replace it will i need a heavy duty balljoint splitter and can these be hired from anywhere ? will the same splitter remove the tie rod end balljoint too ?

is the worn balljoint likely to cause steering wheel wobble, there is no knocking noise or anything.

Hey up mate, you say the disc's look true, if you drive in a streight line at a slow speed & apply even preasure to the brake pedal does the truck come to a progressive stop or is it a bit "stop go, stop go, stop go" sorry for the terminology, if it is a bit stop go, then the discs are warped which causes steering wobble.

If you do have play in the ball joint aswell then that will cause the wobble also, ive never done one so i can't comment on how to go about it though.
If its not broke don't fix it.

cheers si, i got big rack clamps from my work to finish the steering rack, it was a 50 mile round trip but cheaper than buying one

when going slow it brakes fine it more at higher speeds you get it, i tested the brake discs with a pen point against the disc and it looks fine to me, im an engineer and know about truing things up and putting a pen point against the disc could tell me if it was warped or not, i mean noticibaly warped.

i phoned around and nowhere hires out balljoint seperators so it looks like i will need to buy one.

      darn it.

Im sure you would do it with one of those, ive done them before on cars so i don't see these trucks been any different.

Im sure i'll get a telling off shortly if im wrong.

P.S glad you got the rack done, pain in the arse arn't they.

oh yeah the rack is a major pain in the ass, it would be so much easier if the car was up on a lift ramp but crawling about on your back tring to loosen and move tight things is not easy, i think my eyes were going to pop out at one point

the play on the balljoint is very slight and its hard to see it making the steering wobble so much especially as there is no knocking noise coming from it.

i just found that the A suspension arms on both sides have a bit of movement on the 2 main bushes each side and they can be moved back and forth, i dont know whats acceptable with these or whether this movement is normal.

maybe im going to have to go into a garage for a pre mot check and see what they find.

Any lateral movement in a suspension bush is abnormal.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

The lower ball joints take about 15mins to change, roughtrax or milners do them, done both of mine as one was shot it makes sense to do both.
