Transfer case oil ?

Hi,

Was about to change my transfer case oil (2.4 auto 1993) and looking it up seems most people are using GL4 or 5 SAE 75W-90 gear oil...

However, in the surf owners manual I downloaded it says to use auto box fluid dexron II.

So what are people using ?

I looked that sticky up before I posted my question. It says to use gear oil. The Toyota manual says that autobox transfer cases use ATF fluid, and the manual box transfer case uses gear oil. Hence my question.

Maybe it's a misprint in the owners manual ?

Just checked on the Roughtrax site tech sheet and it states
Transfer Box SAE 75W/90 1.1 Litres drain and refill

Ok so from what I can gather through searches it is only the A340H gearbox that has a transfer case that takes dexron II auto fluids. The manual I have must be for a surf with an A340H gearbox.

My gearbox is an A343 so I'm assuming it will be the usual gear oil.

Which oil did you end up using in the transfer case as i seem to have the same auto box as yours (A343F)?

the different oils are due to 2 different types of transfer boxes, gear driven & chain driven.

the auto's 'should' be chain driven & im guessing this is why they use ATF as opposed to gear oil in the gear driven boxes.

to differentiate between the 2.. the casing that supports your output shaft (rear) will be fastened to the transfer box with 5 bolts if its chain driven & 7 bolts for a gear type (i'll grab a pic later if i get chance).
