2nd Gen Fluids

I got a few days off and in this good weather I want to do something productive

Have searched the forum but need a quick "all in one" answer so I can nip to the local Motor Factors.

What fluids need need to be checked/changed and the frequency?

I have already done:-

Engine Oil
Power Steering Fluid
Cooling System
Brake Fluid

What's left to check/replace/top-up?

I am thinking:-

Autobox
Front Diff
Rear Diff

I am missing anything?

Yes. Also look at greasing all the propshaft UJ's and the front suspension. If there are no grease nipples on the front suspension ball joints, look for the blanking plugs, remove unscrew them and screw in one of the grease nipples from the propshaft.

I was working on the fact that as mine's a manual I have a gearbox and transfer box that both have separate oil's and are refilled individually.

I have already done:-

Engine Oil 15w40 mineral to keep it quiet or similar in semi or fully synthetic if you prefer but engine will be louder.8l inc filter
Power Steering Fluid dextron II shouldnt need more than 1l
Cooling System the green one i believe top up to correct strength with 1 or 2 litres or replace with lots, sorry, i dont know the capacity
Brake Fluid dot 4 1 litre to top up with more to change

What's left to check/replace/top-up?

I am thinking:-

Autobox upto 4.5 litres dextron II
Front Diff Front diffs with ADD (all 2nd gen Surfs) are GL5 SAE 75W-90. 1.86 Liters
Rear Diff Standard rear diffs GL5, SAE 90 for above 18 deg C or 80W or 80W-90 for below 18 deg C. 2.2 Liters

LSD rear diffs just use specific LSD gear oil.


I am missing anything? if you are servicing yourself just check everything that you can and remember those grease points

i have a couple of dumbarse questions on this subject

i started my service yesterday(92surf2.4td) and with the water where is the lowest point to drain from,on drain point of the bottom of the rad? and with the transfer box i had a quick look but could not see a drain point or fill hole on there?and when i done the front diff i had to move the a/c rad and bashplate was that right?

Everything renewed and checked!

One thing I noticed though, I took 4 litres out of the auto box and had to put 6 back in!

Gawd, it must have been very low!

Runs like a dream now though!

On the T Case toward the arse end of the truck you will see a nut size 24mil low down and another 24mil nut about halfway up!

Just undo the top one and then the bottom and let it drain out until it stops running!

(I had mine on an incline to fully drain it).

If you look at both the nuts you will see that one is a magnet, put this back at the bottom.

When the truck is level fill through the uppermost hole until it starts to dribble out!
