  • 3rd Gen rear Hatch???

Juddering rear hatch struts, only when closing???

Struts apear to be in good condition with no leaks or rust.

Anyone else with this problem/nuisance ??

Mine is exactly the same, noticed it more in winter, still holds fine & does'nt drop at all.

I open & close it about a dozen times a day though.

Don't think there is anything you can do with it really.
If its not broke don't fix it.

Looks like I'll just have to live with it.

Lets call it a surf "characteristic", sounds better.

There may be someone along soon with a cure for it but i won't get my hopes up.

          I had the same problem.

Replaced with two new genuine struts, which cured the problem.

They are about £75 a strut though.

Was going to suggest a similar thing..

Just browse the net rather then a breakers yard. Im sure someone will do them for less then £75 each.

And if you can't find them when wondering, you may find them by wandering around...

Last time I was in my local motor factors I saw a few gas struts hanging behind the counter. Maybe worth enquiring with you local factors in case they can supply a generic one that matches.

When I bought my genuine Toyota ones there were more than one part number depending on if you had a spoiler or not etc etc....the parts department had to email Japan to check as it was all in Japanese on the epc.

I think there were 4 different part numbers & they all have different rates of strength so it can hold the weight of the tailgate.

It might be worth at least getting a price as the one for your Surf maybe cheaper than the ones for mine......you never know.

Mine does the same........only when opening though.......

...I've tried WD40, Silicon lubricant spray and 3-in-1.....

..3-in-1 was better.......I will be re-applying it tomorrow
