  • Head Gasket question

About to order a head gasket set. Its the 2.4 but I have now bought a 3l head upgrade for it. Question is, will a head gasket set for the 2.4 fit or do I order a gasket for the 2.8 3l head?

2.4 gasket because you want it to suit the bore which is 92mm. The 3L bore is 96mm. Ther are three thicknesses so make sure you get the right one.

Why are there three thicknesses Nev? Also read somewhere aboutthe benefits of opening up the restrictions in the head gasket (ones which restrict water flow) Any thoughts on this?

Not all blocks etc are machined to the same tolerances, so piston protrusion determines head gasket thickness to achieve proper clearance. Thicker gasket than needed will reduce compression and thinner may result in things going bang bang such as pistons hitting valves. Specs are on the Aussie site. Search for "Piston Protrusion".

There's much talk about opening coolant passages but as far as I know there's no hard evidence that it actually achieves anything, so I don't really know and have no personal experience with it, so can't really offer any help.

There's a good topic here - http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/forum/v...hlight=#121959 - about the head gaskets and the differences.
