I think the secret may be in the instructions

New to the forum and very impressed with the resource it offers.

I've just taken delivery of a 91 Surf and ordered and received the Witter towbar.

On looking and re reading the instructions one of the very first things they say is "remove the towing eye's" a simple statement but as they are welded onto the chassis rail a bit more daunting in practice.

Any feedback on whether the 'professionally' fitted witter towbars still retain the towing eyes or whether they have disappeared.

Also any hints on cable colours and location in surf for the towing electrics

                  Cheers All

                  Tony

no, you dont need to remove them... funny because i exclaimed as much as you did when i read the instructions and looked at the welding around the towing eye!

Ours fitted fine with the eye intact, apart from we needed to enlarge the hole in the chassis rail for the vertical bolt on the near-side. it aligned just fine after that.

                    shish

I fitted a Witter to mine last weekend and one of the nearside bolts doesnt line up. It took me literally 1 minute to enlongate the hole in the chassis with a tungsten burr in a drill, its no big deal. Most of the wiring is also on the nearside and it looks like the wiring goes from there over the roof and down to the offside but it doesnt, I uncovered a few wires and tested them but no go, so I pulled back the offside inner trim as well and ran a bit of speaker wire across the bottom tailgate trim to pick up the flasher and fog lamp wires. I didnt bother running another side lamp wire across, just connected black to the brown.

                      SURF:

Earth (vehicle chassis) White & Black

Left hand indicator (green & black wire)
Right hand indicator (green & yellow wire)
Left hand tail lamp (green wire)

Right hand tail lamp (green wire)

Brake Light (green & white wire)

Rear fog light (n/a) ...(Find the red)

Wish I had seen this thread earlier. I had the same problem. I just pushed a suitable sized drill through when all else failed. Just check the torque of all the bolts after your first towing trip. I found that a couple had loosened a little.

Whoops! Should have read the other pages before putting my two-pennorth in. The above has already been covered.

                          I'll retire the grinder then

Phewwwww. Thanks everyone, I really didn't want to get the grinder out, can get a bit messy.

The weather's fine and wife and daughter off to the Devon SHow so its playtime. I'll give you an update later.

                          Thanks again

                          Cheers

                            All done now

Tow bar on and electrics sorted in 3 hours.

Only needed to take off the spacing washer that sits on top of the nearside towing eye and run a drill up through the vertical hole.

                            Fits well and looks ok.

Electrics a bit fiddly due to the trim removal although once you get going doesn't take too long.

All in all an OK job, don't know what I was worried about.

                            Thanks for all the help

                            Cheers
