  • Prevention better than cure

Hi, have just bought a 1998 surf 2.4 here in Swaziland ( the usual Jap import model) and as usual have bought the thing first and then looked on the internet to find out about it. I'm worried by all the talk of cracked heads and overheating. Mine seems to run fine at present. Our temperature is up in the 30's at the moment yet it still runs fine and the temp gauge sits in the middle, up hill and down vale.

My question is whether the cracked heads are inevitable or is there some magic way that it can be avoided with the correct maintenance. I only use it as a work truck lugging building materials short distances but as I say it gets hot here and there are many steep hills and I cant afford big repair bills.

I would be greatful of anyones advice as to how to prevent any serious engine damage. I am a reasonably competant home mechanic.

Heres hoping to benifit from your experience.

Hello Rob and welcome to the forum.
I think the guys on here would probably want to know a bit more about your car.
    1998?
    2.4?
    Is this diesel or petrol?
    3rd Gen KZN185 etc?

I'm sure they will get back to you shortly.

the 2.4's ended in 93 so it will be a 2nd gen.1998 is probably the year it was first imported and registered in the country.
Just make sure the truck is well serviced and if you can fit a external oil cooler as this will keep alot of heat away from the radiator and help keep the coolant a bit cooler.
fit a new thermostat and rad cap also unless you know for sure all this work has already been done.

        Only on an auto.

Here's one thing you should read.

Other than that, then a complete service including a cooling system flush, refill, new thermostat and radiator cap is a good start.

Change the timing belt, tensioner, idler, water pump, crank and cam seals if you are unsure when this was done.

Finally, keep your fingers crossed. They don't all crack heads.

If you post Model and Frame number I can tell you exactly when the vehicle was built.

That looks a very good mod to do to the temp gauge. It seems so much more accurate aswell.I may well have a mess about with one of the gauges from a breaker and see what i can do
