  • car pulls to the right when 4wd high is selected

    Hi
Hope some one can help when I put the surf into 4wd high the car pulls to the right. If you let go of the steering wheel it turns in that direction. When braking it would appear to be ok though.
As soon as you take it out of 4wd, it drives without pulling to the right.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

you realise that you can't use 4wd on the road or you'll end up with transmission wind up and can be exspensive to repair.Or are you on about off road for 4wd

Sounds to me like your front diff may be goosed, although I would have expected strange sounds to form part of that. It looks like you are getting drive from the transfer case to the front diff and then nothing to the front left ( nearside) wheel. In any case something on the drivetrain to that wheel is wrong by the sound of it. The pull to the right only in 4WD would tell me that the right wheel is being driven and the left is not.
( Now looking forward to somebody clever coming along with a good theory )

Richard, I had those thoughts myself prior to posting but then thought, stuff it, if Im wrong, so be it. I could still end up looking like a prize plum but on a positive note I can now share the pain with you. ( and Im not even going to go down the "pair" of prize plums route or all the Finbarr Saunders , ooh er Madams will appear out of the woodwork).

sounds like your add on you front axle isnt working,if this is not engaging you will only get drive to the front off side wheel and this will make it pull.

thanks all for your quick responses. Shall now have a look to see if there is somthing wrong with front diff etc.
Also without sounding as you like to put it, a plum. If i want to use the fwd ie for driving in thick snow on the road is this going to be okay? At the time I was towing a heavy trailer and I had to get up a steep hill, without the fwd it was'nt going up said hill it was only when i unhitched the trailer and had forgotten to take it out of fwd that i noticed this problem. Is this also going to be a problem for me to use the fwd, I always thought that you could use fwd whenever needed road or not.
Ocassoinally go off road to hard not to round here.

                    Did this ever get sorted?

Gen 2 Surf has the same issue. Steers fine in 2 wd but pulls right something hellish in 4wd. Driving over Rannoch Moor with snow on road i selected 4wd. OKish when plenty snow but when got on a dry patch it pulled right big style.
