front diff

I have a replacement diff/axle waiting fitment and just want to check if the following is right-
The drive-shafts are off and I can turn the hubs freely without turning the crown=wheel.
Turning the prop. turns the crown wheel but not the hubs.
When I turn the shorter hub the small gears (spider?) make a slight clicking sound.
I thought turning the hubs would turn the propshaft to enable working out of the ratio.
