  • autobox cooling additives

    Hi,

anyone have any experience using an additive to cool the temp of the auto box? Mine seems to run pretty warm, which is the norm from what I can gather, and my fluid is fine. I don't do any towing, and don't want to go to the expense of fitting a cooler. I just found a product called Trans, made by Extreem Sports Additives that claims to reduce gear oil temp by 48 degrees.F.

If anyone has tried this or something similar, or has any thoughts I'd be keen to hear.

    Cheers

Generally keeping the ATF cool is the No1 way of making things work happily and last, but I understood autos normally run at about 170-200 deg, lowering it by a 1/4 maybe to much. Would be good if you tow alot though.

Would rather run a extra cooler and good ATF fluid.

And actually you can overcool an autobox. They don't work well until up to a decent temperature anyway.

Generally I'm a bit of a scheptic when it comes to additives but I do use them in my engine. I tend to believe things when they are sold either by real specialists - Motor sports, Off road modification companies, car restoration companies (I tend to go with most things that Frost's say on products).

Generally I think in an autobox I would go with a cooler rather than an additive. Because they use the fluid as a coolant, hydraulic oil and lubricant, they make quite significant demands on the oil. If it all starts to get a bit gloopy like some additives can make things do, then the box is not going to work well.

      Cheers

Thanks guys. It was a product I had not seen before and I just wanted some opinions. I'll try anything to keep my baby running as long as possible. Like I said the tranny tunnel does get pretty warm in the cab but I guess at 170-200 degs it will do.
