  • Wandering/juddering

My 94 3.0TD has some interesting and irritating 'features'. I'm looking for any pointers for the problem(s) below:

No.1 is a tendency to wander over the road, but especially to the left. Initial thoughts here are tracking and/or bushes.

No.2 is a judder when braking at a higher speed. There's no problem at town speeds, just A road upwards. I've had very similar before on a Sierra and it was a combination of bushes and a cracked disc. Thoughts on this one are warped/binding discs, and worn bushes again.

No.3 is vibration through the steering wheel above 50mph. Thoughts here are wheel balancing, dodgy tyres, worn bushes.

Common link each time is bushes, but I've had it in a local garage for a tracking check, and while there he also checked the bushes. They informed they couldn't find any problems, and all was within tolerances.

I don't know of anyone in/around the St Helens area that I can try a wheel swap with to rule out the wheels/tyres. I'm also unaware of any good garages for investigating the Surf.

Has anyone come across this who can give some insight?

Any help welcome as at this rate I'll have arthritis in my arms from all the vibration!!!
Everything's easy, when you know how!

Pulling to the left sounds like the steering idler arm as mine did the same i'd already replced the bushes put it still pulled slightly MOT knocked it on the ball joint www.milneroffroad do them the idler arm has dropped by around £40 so get one while they are cheap theres 3 nuts & bolts on the inner wing + ball joint, the new one also has a handy grease nipple.

Wheel judder could be the tyres themselves, unless you have replaced them since you bought it. Some vehicles have sat for quite a while at the docks etc and tyres deflate over time causing out of shape tyres. It has happened to others on here and no amount of balancing will sort it, new tyres will. Pulling sounds like tracking, had it on mine, tracking done runs nice and true.
On braking I would hazzard a guess at warped disks, had it on others motors and was always warped disks, didn't notice it at slow speeds only braking from faster speed.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.
