  • Your Opinions!

I have been looking at diffs for my surf, and was wondering what you lot think are better, ARB Air lockers, or seemingly the more robust Detroit lockers. I am in the understanding that with an air locker you need a compressor and a couple of air lines. So you need to have the compressor on all the time that you need the differential to lock. Whereas the Detroit locker seems to be a lot less complicated. you install it and forget it. Whilst on road it behaves like any normal diffs, yet when you lose traction on one wheel it locks up automatically with no driver intervention at all.

It would be useful to hear from peoples experiences with both, as i have yet to make my mind up, and i still have not yet figured out the ratio needed for the oversize tyres.

I don't have any experience of a Detroit but do have an ARB fited to the rear of my truck. What can I say - it works. You only engage it when needed when not needed you have a standard open diff. The only problem I've had was not with the locker but with the assembly of the diff when it was fitted to my 2.4. I solved that on the 3.0 my installing it myself I think you've only got to look at what most competitors use for a recommendation.

As for the need for a compressor, I use the air con pump and an on board tank and it has come in handy on a number of occasions for inflating tyres, etc.
