  • Can Autos be converted to Manual easily?

This is in reference to both 2.4 and 3l Diesel Surfs:

I just went snooping around the local Surf dealers/privateers most of them have the wretched little Auto gearboxes in em (OK, I am scared of Autos, there you go, I've said it ).

Is it possible to change the Gearboxes to Manuals do we know? Is it easy? Do we have to interfere with any electrics (I am hoping that there is no pickup in the ECU thingamijig)

by the way, are there 3.0l Surfs which are not Turbo'd or Intercoolled? - I hope not.

    Regards

    Manuals

Hi Mate l am 99% sure you can not put a manual gearbox onto a automatic engine. When l 1st started importing Surfs l tried to buy engines and l was asked did l want engines for MANUAL or AUTOMATIC as they where a different price. l have since found out that the crankshaft is slightly smaller on the auto to the manual. so to change you would need a engine and box together.

No need to be scared, I've gone from a 1.3LXi manual to a 3.0 Litre Auto and have no problem...just remember to forget about your left leg....until you get out of the vehicle that is LOL

They are all turbo'd, but the intercooler is only found on some of the 3rd gen models, easily spotted as they have a nice scoop on the bonnet.

Greebo, More autos than Manuals on the market right now, dude - widens the choice to pick from, perhaps there is a a price differential too & I dont mind learning how to instal and run the Manual GB.

Elvz, are your findings contrary to Bob's? Or is one doing a spot of character-assasination on Bob's integrity, matey

This has been bugging since the thread was started, I have a little voice in the back of my head that says the input shaft pilot hole in the crank was deleted on motors that had auto trannys. Now i've been searching for it in all the Toyota and Rover V8 forums I know, and a few new ones I've found while looking but can't come up with anything. Sure it was either of these motors. Maybe I dream't it!

                      Carry on anyway.....................

It was all so much easier on my Landie Lightweight - if it dont fit, use a blow torch and then hammer it into place

Greebo, I am on almost the exact opposit side of the coast (Preston, Lancs). I am not particularly looking to buy from a dealer, simply because I would embarrass myself when it comes to the prices.

The vehicle that I was going to sell to fund the buy suffered a Cylinder Head Gasket failure which it was being valeted for the sale and its just created a thundering hole in my budget - I will either import via a local importer or buy second hand, I might even buy a scratched up/dented one which I could build up over time.
