  • Weird Rev things

    Hi all,

I have an M reg 3.0l diesel auto (which I have been trying to sell for a month but have given up trying now).

I think it has an earth fault or the earth straps need cleaning as the warning lights on the dash come on and stay on but it hadnt made a difference to the driving.

Anyhoo, it has now started to do weird things while driving. I will try to explain as best I can.

I can be going along just fine then all of a sudden the rev counter (and revs) drop erratically and carry on doing so. Its almost like it is going to cut out but doesnt. Might this all be part of the same problem? I have had lots of 4x4s in the past but never an automatic jap import so it is all a bit strange to me.

Any ideas welcome. Failing that, if you know any good places to dump cars that would be good too!! ;o)

If the warning lights are coming on, but there's no noticable difference to performance, then it's the alternator thats faulty.
Check belt/s tension and electrical connections on the back first though.

Cheers for that. I did kind of think it was the alternator but the auto electrician guy where I work said it could just be the earth thing that I mentioned. Bit of a pain as they can be quite pricey if I need to replace it cant they?!

I will get it checked out and report back to let you know if it sorts it.

      Many thanks.

Don't forget folk like Supersurf, Stormforce, Red Robo (he has a 3rd gen but it's the same engine) and Lord Lucan are breaking 3.0 litre surfs, you might get one from them cheaper. It's worth asking the question in the 'Parts for Sale' thread

Stormforce is sending me an alternator in the week so hopefully that should solve the problem

Umm, Just looking on Tonys 4x4toys website and he mentions about egr valves and the fact that they can cause the vehicle to hesitate in acceleration etc. Might this be the cause of my revvy problem perhaps? It only does it after smurf has warmed up or been running for about half hour to and hour. Quicker on warm days for some reason.

If this may be the case, where be the egr valve and how do I shut it off. I am sure there are threads on here some where!
