Tyre \size Differential

Hi

Does anyone know if it's dangerous to operate a car with 2 different size wheels? I have 265/70x16's on my car and I have no spare.

I have found a 235/75x15 in the garage and was wondering if I could use it as a spare or throw it away! There's about an inch difference in diameter.

I know some cars have space-saver wheels, but are they different diameters?

I have a VW with a space saver and its smaller in diameter, the car leans on it when I use it. Dont see why you cant use yours to get you out of trouble and to the nearest fixer, speed would have to be limited though.

Yep - you can as a get out of trouble tyre... UNLESS you have an LSD on your truck... in that case if you have a rear puncture, you'll have to swap a front tyre onto the back, and use the smaller one on the front.

Aaah - I was wondering about the speed differential between the smaller and larger tyre.

I guess as long as I keep the smaller tyre on the non driven wheels - it should be ok, huh?

The normal open diff will deal with any difference wheel size/speed, if you put different sizes on the rear (and you have LSD on the rear) the LSD will constantly be working to match the axle sppeds and may well overheat. If you have no LSD then it wont matter if the smaller tyre goes on the rear.

Well how daft do I feel? On closer inspection, I find my wheels are 265/70x15!! not 16!

I've only had the car 7 months!

Oh well, at least I know that the wheel I found is the same size as the ones I already have!

Diameter for a 265/70/15 is 29.61 inches, diameter of a 235/75/15 is 28.8 inches so not much in it. I'd just get a 265/70/15 remould from 4x4accessories and tyres for about 35 quid. At least it will be properly useable. I once drove around 120 miles in the US on a spacesaver (on the front as well, naughty me).It was OK but tiring as the car kept wanting to pull to one side (the larger tyred size because it caused more drag).
