  • Help: 4WD Problems

The 4WD dashboard lights on my '96 3rd gen surf are flashing constantly.

    Trying all the various settings:

4Hl - selects correctly and lights don't flash
4Ll - selects correctly and lights don't flash

Problem seems to be with 4H and 4L (without the locked diff).

    I think it's stuck in 4H.

Any suggestions (I've tried forward and reverse in all setting and nothing changes)

    Another symptom.

If in 2WD (nominally as it doesn't seem to be selecting) then pressing the selector button makes the lights go out but then they return flashing.

If in 4wd pressing the selector button seemingly does nothing (the lights continue flashing).

Have you had a crawl around under the truck? look for loose connections or split hoses on the t/case and under the bonnet.

4wd engagement and disengagement problems usual stem from a fault in the vacuum hose system since this is how the ADD (automatic disconecting dif) is driven.

          http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/add/

You'll need to get under the car and check all the vacuum pipes coming from the front diff and check for splits etc. Your problem sounds partly electrical too so I'd be checking, cleaning and remaking all the electriccal conections to the fron diff and central transfer box. The Hi range/Low lever is purely a mechanical linkage to the transfer box and ought to be problem free. Only change between hi & low ratio in neutral or park.

The only other problem could be faulty sensing switches which tell the car which state the hi - low box is in.

Looks like it's going back to the dealer.

To complicated for me to start poking around with.
