  • ??? D-4d Coversion??? on a Surf

OK - this is for the serious dieselheads out there!

Has anyone ever thought of fitting a 3.0 d-4d? Father in law recently sold his '04 Vette so we nipped down the auctions and got an '05 120 series L'cruiser (ex highways agency) for 12K. (almost 30k new)

Compared to this cruiser, my Surf seems like a bit of a tractor. Its probably all the extra sound insulation etc. but also, the consumption and bhp is also better.

not sure if d-4d's like veg though.

In SA, the 120 series l'cruiser only ever had the KZ-TE diesel, so space-wise, a D-4d should fit in a Surf!?!

    What are your thoughts?

Most of the newer diesels, including the D4D IIRC, use a common rail injection system. Common Rails do not like Veg unfortunately.

But yeah, other than that it would be interesting to fit a newer diesel to a Surf. The technology has vastly improved, and modern diesels are far more efficient and powerful.

Well, you can get a 3rd gen with a D4D so it will fit in there. And a 2nd gen 3.0 has the same engine as 3rd gen 3.0 so it should fit in there too. Have a look at this thread:

Obviously it will need all the electronic spagetti and the control boxas well.

and sadly that's where most conversions end. Wiring and ecu gubbins.
To get a donor write off is usually not cost effective.
Smack it with a 16lb Hammer and it will come off!
