  • very very big problem!!

eerrrr I have a large problem.

on saturday dad filled our 3.0l td surf to the brim (40l he put in) with PETROL!!!! from a diesel pump!. didn't know until we drove 21.3 miles and then died! (no surprise).

it already had a 1/4 tank of diesel in so a 3-1 ratio petrol to diesel.

towed it home and drained the lot and the filter was cleaned in diesel and filled with diesel.

BUT now it won't start (yes we have diesel if only a little in the tank)

it won't turn over sounds like the batteries are dying any suggestions??

exactly the same thing happened about a year ago but when drained and re-filled started first time!

Diesel engines need to turn over quicker than petrol engines to start them, so re-charge the batteries, over night if possible and the engine should fire up easier.

Oh, and keep adding more diesel to the tank when you can to flush out the petrol.

        re

Surely it is down to the garage to put right! If they stick petrol in the diesel tank then its their fault. I wouldn't be messing about with it.

First of all charge batteries or jump from another car, assuming your dad hasn't filled that one with wrong fuel too. Keep pressing the primer on top of the filter until it becomes hard to push. Then turn over with the key whilst someone else (not ya dad) keeps pressing the fuel primer. It will start eventually.

If it was me, id get a big jerry can of diesel in there 1st. I wouldnt waste time charging the batts. My batts did this after a fuel filter change once. I just connected the surf to a 2 litre mondeo, got someone to turn the surf key while i kept pressing the fuel primer. VROOM VROOOOOMM.

stuck a gallon of diesel in, charged the batteries (which were totally knackered and seemed they had been for a couple of months!) and turned it over a couple of times then it started, couple of days later it wouldn't start (batteries gave up the ghost).

so 2 new batteries later and it is right as rain (didn't need to prime for starting as we poured some neat diesel in after it was cleaned).

so now after towing 2 ton of car+trailer next up on the list of things to fit (apart from a 2" lift) is a oil cooler seperate from the rad and a transmission cooler.

              cheers for ya help guys.
