Limited Slip Diff Recognition.

Not really, unless you get into a situation when one is needed!

Jack both rear wheels off the ground and turn one wheel by hand, if the opposite side wheel turns in the same direction, you have an LSD.

Also, there maybe a sticker on the rear axle.

I have looked and cant see a sticker. Ill try the jack up the rear, oh err, this weekend.

Do bear in mind though that if you do have an LSD it will be at least 14 years old and probably won't work as well as it did when new, and will need different oil when re-filling or topping up.

Ah so its probably definately not a ltd slip then as the surf is a 95/N reg.

While i was out under the car fitting my suspension lift today, i noticed something through the grime. On the rear axle, just to the left of the diff, near the top, a small white rectanguler sticker. I tried to clean it off a little to see wot it said. But this was no good. I cannot make anything of the small sticker.
So, tomorrow, when i jack the rear up to do the wheel turn test, do i put it in gear before i spin a wheel? And then if they turn the same way, its a limited slip? Is this correct?

The quickest way to tell is by the vin plate

If the diff code ends in a 5 it's a lsd EG G145

Apache had a little white sticker on his rear axle, it had LSD in red letters.

OIL TYPE

if it is lsd and working you need special LSD oil

If you jack up just one side and you have LSD (OOOoooo errr) you will struggle to turn the wheel (out of gear) if you dont the wheel will turn relatively easily.
With both wheels off the ground (neutral/handbrake off) both wheels turn the same way with LSD, without it one always turns the opposite way....to help prove it someone may need to hold the propshaft, but that would be unusual.
If you try to wheelspin on grass/loose surface with LSD, both wheels will spin, without ony one will.

Unfortunately, there's loads of types of LSD. Main-types:

Clutch-plate: (like in BMWs) are normally stuck -- with one wheel in the air (in Park), there will be a little bit of resistance to turning the wheel (it'll feel like it's stuck or frozen)

Fluid types: they have fluid couples, and you won't be able to easily tell without identifying the particular diff.

Centrifugal lock: If you put one wheel up in the air on an axle stand, you'll be able to drive off if you spin the wheels pretty hard. (not a safe thing to do however).

Best just get an expert to look at it.
