  • black smoke at idle with ac on

    Hey all,
The only minor thing I have going with the surf at the moment is the aircon (oh, and the rear demist seems to have finally gone). When I've got the aircon on and the truck is idling, the RPM drops right down to 500 and I get clouds of black smoke out the exhaust.
I checked the little fuse that controls the aircon-on-boost-rpm thingie and it's not blown. What else could it be?
Before it had the new head, it used to run fine with the aircon on, idled at about 750 RPM. Now it idles fine at 750 but not with the ac on.
There are only 10 types of people in the world - those that understand binary and those that don't.

I'd check all the various vacuum pipes to the inlet etc, there are lots of them and it's easy to get them mixed up, the car will run like a dog with them on in the wrong places, even to the point of stopping the turbo working.

However I reckon that the timing could well be a tooth out, if it is too retarded then the engine will definately smoke as there will be unburnt fuel aplenty. Also this would make the engine less powerful which may be the reason why it can't overcome the aircon compressor at low revs.

Just a couple of ideas that could be completely off base but worth a look.

    Cheers

the rear demist will have broken the conectors off from the window going up and down, what you need to do is take the rear panel off and get the window about half way down or up which ever and you will see the spade connectors on the glass, they will have come adrift .thats all there is to it.
so much to do , so little money , so little time

Unless its like mine, and the connectors where fine and the wire was broken about 6" up the plastic sheathing, took a while to work it out.
