  • 4WD problems

    need some help,,

just got the surf back after having the front and rear diff replased.

running fine when in 2wd ,,but,, it wont go into 4wd high

when i try pressing the button on the low range gear stick,, it starts beeping and the 4wd light flashes on the dash.

now, could this be a electrical prob?

the 2 diffs came off a 4 runner, are the electrics the same as in a surf?

any help would be great as i'm desperate to get off road again to see if the rear lsd makes any difference.

    thanks again

    cheers scotty

      cheers mate,,

      dont know about vac pipes.

when i tryed pressing the 4wd button i was in 2nd gear doing about 15-20 mph on a straight bit of road.

when im not moving and press the button,, i hear it clicking as if it is engauging,, but no 4wd light comes on.

thanks again for the quick reply

OK, think i know what the problem is, i just need some wise advice as to how to get it sorted.

right,, on the front diff there are 2 electrical connections, 1 on the front as you look at it and 1 at the back.

the front one is pluged into the new diff, but where the rear one goes there is no point to plug it in.

this is the old diff with the plug that i am talking about

this is what that plug looks like when you unscrew it from the diff

this is the back of the new diff ( out a 4 runner) as i hope you can see there is no hole for this to go into

            so,, what is this connection?
            do i need it?
what can i do to it, to get my 4wd working?
BTW the new diff out the 4 runner says ADD on it, if that makes any difference.

again many thanks if you can help

            cheers scotty

Front sensor is the ADD detection switch. This is what turns on the light when 4WD is engaged providing everything else is working. Rear is the diff oil temperature sensor. As far as I know this will prevent engaging 4WD if the oil temperature is too high.

I can't be sure if this will work but it's worth a try. Check the number of wires in the plug and if there are two bridge them and see if it will engage 4WD and the light on dash will stay on.

thanks guys for all the help,

just had a look, and there are 2 wires going to the sensor, so what do you think, cut them and join them together?

i would expect the light to come as everthing was fine untill i goosed the diff.

Don't cut them before you test by bridging the wires. If it does not work you may have to install the sensor.

                        thanks nev,

what do you mean by bridging the wires.

do you mean, use another bit of wire between the 2 points on the connector and see what happens.

                        sorry to be a pain

                        cheers scotty

Nev, you are a F***IN STAR,

the next time you are in Glasgow give me a shout because i owe you beer.

bridged them and the 4wd light stays on.

i will cut the wires now and connect them up.

again, i cant thank you enough.

thought that i was going to have to get the diff drilled and the sensor pull in.

                            big cheers
