  • brake & atf fluid change & new bearings

seeing im keeping the red peril another year i thought i would change the brake fluid and the gearbox oil ready for the planned euro disney trip

    so my questions are

brakes . . . . do i just buy one of those bleed kits with the valve and drain then refill the fluid & do i need to do all 4 bleed nipples so i know ive removed all the old fluid? never tried this before so dont have a clue

    gearbox
it says i need 4.5 ltrs of dexron 2 atf fluid is this enough for a FULL renew?
can i just crack open the g/box sump plug and allow to drain out ?
then get the wife to stand there 2 hours refilling through the dip tube?
ive seen the thread on cracking both pipes that go into the rad but am not really confident about doing it that way i mean do you have to remove half the front end to do it? how easy is it to get to the conections?

    bearings
i had a noisey n/s bearing and had it adjusted up about a month ago
its noisey again so am going to change the pair ie both front wheels
ive read the thread on here and may give it a try but am worried i will overtighten or even undertighten
the comment of "tighten up then slacken off a bit" fills me with dread
is there a torque setting to tighten to then to slacken off to?
and it says use about 450 gram of grease is that per wheel or for the pair of wheels as ive noticed it says dont overfill or the seal will pop

thanks in advance guys but please bear in mind that im no mechanic and tend to worry whether ive forgoten to put things back on correctly

I would advise bleeding from all 4 just so you know that its new fluid all round

the connections on the 3l are easy enough to get to once the bash plate is off.Not sure on how much fluid it takes and yes its ok to undo the drain plug and let it all out.If you refill thru the dipstick i found it easier to get a small funnel that fits into the tube and then a slightly bigger funnel going into the smaller one to make filling a bit easier

When you drain the gearbox measure the fluid if you can, As you wont empty it. Put in what you took out volume wise then check fluid level as you fill.

Here's my top tip for filling gearboxs/diffs, get your self a cheep (about £5 from B&Q) pump up 6ltr spray bottle, the sort with a hose and trigger.
Take off the spray nozel and slip a short bit of flexable hose over the pipe.
Then all you have to do is fill to correct amount, pump it up and stick the flexie end down the tube.....now the best bit is the trigger can be latched on, so you can go a do ya brakes while it fills up

As for your brakes, get one of the bleed kits that consist of a one way valve that fits on the bleed nipple, I made some of these for the chaps in my club and they are soooo good, I can bleed the brakes on my SJ in about 3 mins. The Ezee? bleed kits that use tyre pressure are an absolute mare

        Best of luck fella

so the only way to totally empty is to do the pipe thing then?
or would having the engine running help the oil to fully depart through the drain hole?

I got a smalish funnel pushed a bit of fuel hose on the end bout 8" -fits a treat in the dip tube and props it self against the engine a treat and is easy to pour the oil straight in, got the dextron III from the forecourt of Morrisons in 500ml size and it worked out cheaper than the local factors. The empty container once cleaned was good for topping up the diffs (got a retractable spout)
Did I mention I have a BLUE one

              right
              calamaty
i went to morrisons and bought the atf fluid (dextron 3)
decided i would remove the pipe from the bottom of the rad and drain it that way
took the bash plate off 4 bolts easy as pie
removed 1 pipe from the bottom of the rad
atf fluid was running out of the pipe bur very slowley so decided to start the engine
placed the end of the removed pipe in an old oil tub so i didnt make a mess on our brand new wharehouse floor

well it was about that time i realised that you should really remove the pipe on the left (as you look at the front of the car) as this pipe runs to the rad cooler and then through the other pipe back to the gearbox

              well
i know my pump in the gearbox (or wherever it is) works and works well
it shot the fluid through the rad and out of the other side all over the floor
oh yes the pipe i had laid in the old oil drum was just sat there dripping nicely as the force of the pumped fluid was hitting the front axle through the now open outlet in the bottom of the rad and making a nice big puddle under the car

oh gosh i said to myself as i rushed to turn the engine off

the md of the company just happened to call down to see how the guys were getting on with a job at the other end of the wharehouse

quick as a flash i said "look at that it was making a noise and i brought it in to look under the car and the pipe just went bang! lucky i was here and not on the motorway hey??"
his reply "mmmm clean it up before you go tonight"

so all in all a lesson learned me thinks
undo the pipe on the LEFT hand side of the rad (as you stand and look at it) and allow it to run gently into an old oil drum

              easy job to do
used 8 bottles of 500 ml atf fluid and it needed another to get back to level
will check in the morning when ive run it to work and see if it needs anymore
i may just tackle the brakes tommorow as the md is at the races
