  • Clunk from front end

    I have a 92 2nd generation 2.4TD Surf SSR-X
Have a clunk from the front steering/suspension. It occurs mostly when breaking with lock on even if only a small amount, though sometimes just with lock on or sometimes just breaking. Can’t figure out if noise is from left or right.
I have replaced track rod, upper & lower suspension arm ball joints.
I’ve removed the anti roll bar and I’m certain it’s not a shock or wheel bearings.
I can’t detect any play on the upper or lower suspension arm bushes but think this is where the fault is.
How involve is it to replace them?
    Are there any special points?
Do I need any special tools?
Can it be done without removing the ball joints?

No he isn't, that's a common 'feature' with Surfs

          Hi
Am I being thick here? But can you tell me how the steering stops can have any effect on the fault I explained? The way I see it the stops only come into contact with anything is when on full or near full lock. not on slight lock or when breaking.

            No you're not being thick!

The stops come into play as you rightly say as you get near full lock. Often folk come into the forum with tales of woe and we are in the habit of starting with the basics and working from there. As blobs of grease and 5 minutes of your time is a small investment do that and if it continues you're next post will be 'clunk on steering and braking- have already greased the stops!'

            Have you done it?

              Hi Dave
No I haven’t tried greasing the stops yet. Will go and do it now. If it works a bottle of Scotch is yours
              Regards, David

                  clunk as well

I followed the picture that gerts linked to this subject and indeed greased the rusty stops, but when I came to actually add some via a gun to the nipples shown in picture

                  my car doesn't have them.

the place where they should be is occupied with a small blunt bolt head on both wheels

                  very puzzling

Nope. That's how they should be. Those are blanking plugs. You want some M6 nipples. Take the blanking plugs out and insert the nipples.

With regards to the clunk, best thing to do is get the front jacked up and on axle stands so that the wheels are off the ground and tug on everything until you find out where the play is. I'd personally suspect the track rod ends. When you said you'd replaced the track rod, did you just mean one end or all?

OK some of you have had your little jokes.
To my shame and against any intelligent judgement I greased the stops. Needless to say a bottle will not be going to Scotland.
To say fit grease nipples to the end of the stops must be one biggest load of cr$p I’ve yet come across on this site.
Do all of you who keep on about steering stops actually know what their intended purpose is? I will agree that greasing them could stop grinding noise on full lock..
Aren’t there any real engineers out there instead of a bunch of Barrack room mechanics
who would seem to be hard pressed to tell the difference between a spanner and a vernier gauge!
Come on you proper grease monkeys I know you are out there lets have some sensible input.
I have had the front up on stands and as I said in my 1st post all ball joints have been

Hey you're good at this forum malarky aren't you? I see you've mastered the 'sling a few abusive comments around' technique because boy does that make folk want to give up their own time to help you.

                              Genius.
