If that doesn,t work or you're a cheapskate...try a gallon of paraffin in a tank of diesel & test it while you're running on it.

Gamedawn has a novel way of clear soot from the engine and exhaust, He rammed it full of devil pit mud the other day, after starting it up, we were laughing and pointing at the silly hissing noise coming from the exhaust when :BANG!!!: a plug of mud, and a huge cloud of soot over us and the ground. It left a 1' circle of soot on the trail. Job done!
Or alternatly, just use a big dose of Redex in 1/4 tank of deisel, and give it a good blast up the motorway.4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...

hi cjp if all the above dont get it down far enough (make sure it is as warm as possible before the test as well), I had a volkswagen Lt that had the same problem every year so I used to slacken the throttle right off so it only allowed about a quarter throttle when the pedal was pressed right down, the tester knew what we'd done every year but could do bugger all about it, this went on for a few years with him getting increasingly peaved off so he started to pull the van up on other daft stuff so last year we took the exhaust off and made the single side exit back box into a double exit back box but the pipe which exited on the test machine side only had a half inch hole inside so hey presto when he floored it this year full revs but most of the gas out the opposite side to his test machine so hes a happy tester again (until he figures out). hope it doesn't resort to this for you.
cheers

This without a dought will sound totally stupid but can someone tell me what a EGR is/stands for as I am one of those who has a need to know I know where it is and yes due to smoking I am going to disco it but it is getting on my t**ts that I don't know what it stands for.
Help required please lads & lasses.

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve.
The EGR valve is a vacuum operated valve which allows recirculation of exhaust gasses back into the inlet under certain conditions. It's main reason is for emission control as it's action reduces the temperature of burn in the combustion chamber by reintroducing burnt gases which are inert into the cycle. This reduction in burn temperature reduces the amounts of nitrates of oxygen (NOx) produced because they are only produced over a certain combustion temperature.
However the downside of the EGR is it also reduces burn efficiency and therefore power. Also it reintroduces a large amount of particulates which increases the smoke and also by reducing the efficiency of burn starts to exhaust unburnt fuel (black smoke).
Removing the EGR valve often (But not always) has the following effects:
1. Less smoke
2. More Power
3. Reduced Carbon emissions (measured in the UK, NOx is not)
4. More consistent cylinder temperatures - less localised hotspots. This is an area of contention.
The views of various people differ on this with everyone putting forward some valid points, so you remove at your own risk, test and see if you think it is better or worse, and put back if you want or not as the case may be.
Mine has been off for a year now and it's staying off.
One final thing, there is no guarantee that the EGR is even working on your truck. They often fail through being blocked or having a split diaphragm.
Have a search on here for EGR and you should be able to find a lot of info about it.
Cheers
