  • Turbo, and motorway driving.

I was just wondering what is the maximum speed people can cruise at on flat stretches of motorway in a 2.4 without the turbo light coming on. Mine comes on when I get to around 60 mph. Is this normal? 2.4's only please.

Our 89 2.4 used to cruise at 75-80 on anything but a proper hill, with no turbo on, as soon as you needed to squeeze the throttle, it'll fire up the turbo, you can back of a long way and still hold your speed.

With the 31's now it light up easier, as the gearing is taller and you need to get into the throttle sooner to keep it going on slopes.

Its all about the amount of vacuum you create, by pressing the throttle harder, that spools the turbo up to working pressure as the exhaust pressure increases. Once the motor is at the revs you want, you need less throttle to hold it their, and the turbo can unload.

      Turbo

      Hi

My 2.4 turbo light comes on at about 65mph on a flat motorway, although it doesn't really make much odds. One of the lads at work is doing a project on diesel engines and it turns out that:

      1) The turbo runs all the time on a diesel - there is always some kind of boost, the green light just comes on when the boost pressure goes above a pre-determined level.

      2) The fuel consumption isn't that different between turbo and non turbo at a given engine speed. Turbo uses about 5% more which is hardly noticeable when the vehicle is doing under 30mpg. However, there is a noticeable increase in power.

      ie don't worry about it.

My green turbo light is constantly on above 2000rpm unless i slow down or coast it.

Snap, mine is virtually permanent as well, if i back off the throttle to turn the light off, it slows down !!

I think this is good as it tells me i have no vacuum leaks ??? Hopefully !

Good, if it comes on on a 3.0lt you need to get the wallet out!

Its the ECU fault light, for fault finding problems in the car, it'll flash different No.'s of blips, for different faults.
