My viscous fan cuts in now and again when driving hard for a few hours. You here it cut in now and then for around 20 seconds. When cold it should be able to turn easily, when hot it takes up drive and is hard to turn. The heat from the radiator engages it when needed but if it don't work correctly then you could be in trouble !
There are plenty of places to buy new couplings on the net.

P.S don't make the fatal mistake of drilling through it and bolting making it permenant driven unless you get it properly balanced cos this will stuff the bearing after time and send the fan blades into the rad. This has happened on a friends motor!!! Expensive !

My fan runs all the time and should, you can check the oil is good by, on tickover get a newspaper and you should be able to stop the fan and when engine is switched off the fan should be turned reasonably easily. If you can't the oil needs changing.
Changing over to an electric fan doesn't put so much of a drain on MPG and result in a little loss in oomph like the viscous fans.Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

Apart from small gains in power and MPG, the only big advantage of an electric fan is you can turn it off (if you've fitted an off switch) before dunking the car in deep water, and to burying the blades in the rad if they go under water whilst spinning fast.

Yes, mine is as the above website states, certain amount of slip when cold (ie turns but you can stop it) and fully taken up drive when the engines hot enough to engage the clutch. If the fan slips all the time or sticks on solid drive all the time something is wrong. This is the whole point of having the viscous clutch !
