  • Diesel leak from fuel pump

    Evening all,
noticed a small fuel leak the other day, seem to be from the top of the injectors, had the surf booked into garage today anyway for them to sort out a very annoying rattle after head change about 250 miles ago.

Mechanic said the leak is from fuel pump ( now p***ing out when engine running and gets faster as revs increase) and would need diesel specialist to overhaul pump at staggering cost (gulp!)

Did a search, and consensus seems to be the top seal, although I can't actually see where it is comming from, as everything is covered in dielsel.

I have the mechanical pump ( NOT EFI) so is it just a case of removing air filter and then top cover and renewing the seal (Milners Kit) or is it more complex or possibly one of the hoses?

Any help appreciated as I would like to have a leak free surf and actually get it fixed permenantly for once.
    Thanks in advance.
Taking dog for a walk now, be back later.
    Clive.

It's probably the injector pipes are loose after the head change, they may have been move out of the way and that broke the seal causing one or more of them to leak.

Why do they need to send the pump to a diesel specialist?
    are they not mechanics?
    Anyone can tighten a nut!

Thats what I thought, but I think they may be a bit sick of seeing my surf and/or it's not a vehicle they are familiar with.

Lets face it it's not the easyest engine bay to get around with all the stuff the japs fit in, and I think complex things like diesel pumps scare a lot of "mechanics", coz they don't understand them.

I'll have to take the air filter off at the weekend and have a look at the pump to see if I can find the leak.

If they've introduced the leak though, it doesn't matter whether they're chuffed about looking at it or not.

Mech says it's nothing they've done(as usual) so I pretty much got the kiss off. They aint really diesel specialists and to be honest trying to find any competant tradesman in thanet is almost impossible, which maybe down to the very small gene pool!

I think you need to drive over to Cliddesden to get it properly sorted!

It may not actually be 'that' bad mate. I was shatting myself as my 'mechanic' suggested the same thing when he found a fuel leak on my EFI pump. He said I needed to have it takenaway to a diesel 'specialist'..... I went to this so called specialist myself the day after to hear it from the horses mouth and he didn't appear to have a clue.

The garage at the end of my road who hasdealt with a few surfs before told me that the only leak was from the stop switch seal.... I am getting it done on Friday for £45 including putting on a new rocker gasket.

Get a few peoples opinions first, the first few will contradict each other I promise.

£45 seems pretty reasonable to me,it just goes to show you the different oppinions from different mechanics.

so I guess I'll have a look myself over the weekend and if it seems do-able for a non mechanic type I'll have a go, and Nero has kindly offered to help if I need it, so

Cool, well I am not confident enough to do anything mechanical on mine aside from replacing the fuel intake pipe (lost a bolt into the engine bay)...... Then I installed an amplifier to run my bass speaker... guess what I lost a bolt from the top of the battery....... And nearly electrocuted myself too in the process.

Leave it to the mechanics, I just write songs now..... Good luck though.
