  • Will BFG Macadam tyres cause wondering?

The other day I posted on an old thread of similar problems but as it was in the General Chit Chat section I only got a couple of responses. Thankyou to those who replied but I am now starting a new thread as I could please do with some more replys.

I have a 1996 3rd Gen Hilux Surf. I have had the vehicle for a year now & there is a problem that I just can't seem to get sorted.

When driving on the motorway that have ruts/tram lines that have been caused by lorries or any road that has pot holes or ruts the vehicle will follow these ruts & I can't keep the vehicle in a straight line, I have to constantly correct the steering.

I have had the ball joints checked & I have had an alignment check done. The place where I had the alignment check said that it was only a fraction out. They did however swap the front with the rear tyres as he said there was some evidence of stepping in the tread, but still no real improvement. He believes that my 265/70R16 BFG Macadam tyres set to 30psi are to blame, he says that there is to much side wall flex & that I should change them for a different type.

Has anyone else had any experience like this? As I would hate to change the tyres & it made no difference.

I thought maybe a BFG AT or General Grabber AT as replacement?

    Many Thanks

    Regards

    Lewis

Can't comment on the side wall flex, but you could try finding another local Surf and swap tyres/rims for an hour and take them for a run. That way you'd know if it makes any difference without having to splash out.

Just remember, that as you have a 3rd gen, you need 16" rims, 2nd gens are usually 15" so won't fit.

No idea (sorry). I find mine wants to sit in the ruts too - I just let it.

Anyway, I was thinking of getting some BFG Macadams or Long Trails so could you let us know if it turns out that they're your problem and I'll avoid them.

      Thanks.

I've not been any truck with 10.5" or wider tyres that DOESN'T tramline on the lorry ruts.

I don't think there is anything wrong, as long as it doesn't do it on flat, level roads.

I thought the side walls on the sort of tyres fitted to (proper) 4x4s were supposed to flex. That's how the ride comfort is maintained and why they can cope with speed bumps so well.

Mine's like The Perfect Storm everytime I hit a speed bump. Maybe I should slow down.

Yup, the more side wall, and less pressure the better...........

Thats how tyres are 'sposed to look!!!!!

The BFG Macadams offer great grip on roads, but I will inform you if I find out that they are to blame for this problem.

                  It's fine on smooth roads.

Also you get a slight wobble from the back end when you hit pot holes & ruts etc a bit like a shudder in the vehicle.

Well after much research on tyres, every tyre specialist that I have spoken to has stated that there is no way that the BFG Macadam's would be to blame. It's just the fact that the tyres are wide & they will tram line.

However, since replacing my shocks last weekend with Bilstein's the shimmy that I used to get in the back of the vehicle seems to have gone.

A new tyre that has been out for about 3 years now was recommended to me by lots of people during my research & that was the Goodyear Wrangler ATR with its stronger side wall. Probably be my next choice of tyre.
