Interference Engines

Just for reference sake. In one of the previous threads I recall a discussion regarding interference engines. I hope that this link will help in answering future inquiries.

As an added info: most current diesel engines in automotive and light truck use are interference engines. This is due to to their high compression ratios of (in the range of 19 to 24:1). Unless you have an "OLD DESIGN" side valve engine then it will most likely have interference.

Yep I am pretty sure the 2LT and 2LTE are Interferance engines, having had the head off mine there is no clearance dish in the pistons and flat head design therefore the pistons need to be away from Top Dead Center to allow the valves to open otherwise there will be a nasty bang and large amounts of your engine all over the pavement.

Its deffo an interferance engine.... I saw the results on someones surf at the garage who fixed mine...... A piston managed to twist BOTH valves around each other, smashing the centre section out of the head in the process...... we both needed new engines at the same time.......
