  • Towing?

Hi, has anybody here got much experience of towing caravans?

My sis has a Nissan Terrano Manual they use for towing their quite large caravan (2 tonnes) She has burnt the clutch out during a tricky manouver (revering the rig a mile back up a lane uphill) She now feels a certain doubt as to the sutability of the nissan for towing, and now, having seen my surf, has asked if it is capable of towing 2 tonnes, if not, she may go and get a landcruiser instead, Questions, apart from the towing capacity of the Surf, are:-

    1) automatic or manual (she seems to want an auto now)
    2) She only does 5000miles P.A. if the Surf isn't suitable which landcruiser model and vintage makes a good "Tractor" whils remaining reliable.

    Thanks

    Paul

I tow an Ivor Williams 515 (975kgs) plus two ponies (600 - 700kgs) plus all the tack and the auto is not a problem. However, I am fitting an autobox oil cooler this winter.

The Land Cruisers from the early 90's are blo0dy lovely - like a big surf - with 4.2 litre straight six diesels - apparently unbreakable.

This one is about to go for £2500 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1990-TOYOTA-LA...QQcmdZViewItem

my dads one towed thier caravan on a small music tour filled with stuff which weighed over 2000kgs full. then there was weight of the car (2500kgs ish) and 8 people in it and it towed at 80mph all day long.... its done nearly 300,000 miles i think.
dont buy an import - i heard they are really bad on fuel (like my surf )
