  • cv boot mot failure

Failed the mot today on both outer driveshaft gaiters.

Reading through the posts it seems like it will take me 5 hours a side to do the gaiters which is time that i dont have.

My brother in law said he did his with a kit where you glue the gaiter together and it is still going strong a few years later.
Would you recommend doing this, or has anyone actually done this themselves.

The garage quoted me £210 to do the job, which seems a bit excessive, the only benefit from this would be no re test fee.

    Hi Hawkwind
I changed my cv's last week and it took me a couple of hours on the first side cos I did,nt know what to expect ,second one the shaft was out in 30 mins or so. Getting the cv's off takes longer ,still you wont have that problem ,if your changing just the boots, I reckon three hours both sides,if you know ya way round a spanner, tops.
Cant help out on the glue stuff ,sounds good if it really works(I dunno)but remember the glue is only as good as the rubber it's stuck to if you get my drift.

i have tried the glue ones a few times before, and i would only recomend them as a "get through mot boot " if you go off roading then you realy do not want them on!! a little bit of c rap in the cv's and your buggered..

the last ones i used lasted two weeks!!! but i knew wot i was getting in to cause i used them before and they were c rap then!!

so i replaced with the proper ones....

5 hrs a side seems a little much!! i would say 5 hrs for both sides!!

        Thanks for the replies

Do the old boots need to be removed or can the repair boots be fixed over the top of the existing boots??

The only offroading would be with the caravan on muddy fields.

to remove the old boots you need to snip the steel tie that goes around the cv housing then just cut the boot with a knife " FINGERS " the put on you split boots!! if you do decide to use the split boots there are two things i would advise on !!

1 make sure you wear the latex gloves supplied and if there isnt any with the kit ( which there should be) then go and get some..trust me on this

2 check the boots periodically cause if they rip you will be sorry!!

the best thing to do would be to replace with the right stuff!!!!

            Thanks Slim

I may try and fit them over the top of the existing ones just to get them through the test until i can find time to do the job.
