  • Auto gearbox change fault

Help! 3ltr auto 1994. 2weeks ago, drove over a log and smashed speed sensor mounted high up offside rear of gearbox. Top of sensor hanging free attached to cable, remainder still in gearbox csting. No apparent problem and surf dove normally except that O/D OFF light flashed regularly when O/D was engaged. After a couple of days g/box stopped changing into 4th or lockup, using only 1 2 & 3 changing up at 18 & 38 mph which is a lot higher than usual for a light throttle. Like it has dropped into some failsafe mechanical mode. A few days later on a longish journey it started working OK again, but went back to 3 the next day. Obtained and fitted new sensor, flashing O/D light went out, but still only 3 gears. During next longer journey, began working again after an hour (kicked in and out about 10 times before settling down), but again next day back to 3 again.Just repeated the journey today but it has stayed in 3 gears. Grrrrrrrrr. Are these two problems related? Anyone got any ideas how I can get my missing gears back?
    Cheers. Kev

Have you tried resetting the ECU by disconnecting your batteries for 20 mins?

Thanks for the speedy reply Vince. Well I disconnected the batteries for half an hour but on reconnecting, the problem persists. Is half an hour long enough?

        More gearbox woes

OK, time to wake this thread up again. After much consulataion with Toyota dealers and 2 transmission 'specialists' the verdicrt was there there was no fault showing on the electronic side, so it must be a gearbox fault. I managed to source the same model geabox off a 2.4 (well its acutually not quite the same as you'll see in a minute) and eventually got time booked in the change it. meantime I've been roaring around the country still with only 3 gears working - no sign of O/D or lock-up. Fuel consumption is approaching that of an Saturn V on blast off.
Eventually the geat day (or rather day and a half) arrived and we changed the gearbox - discovering along the way that the bellhousing and various electrical connectors were different. Also the animals that removed the 2.4 box sniopped through the kick-down cable so we had to drop the valve chest cover off the replace that. Put it all back together and ... yes you guessed it ... still only 3 gears . Oh - and it seems about 15% lower geared than the 3.0 into the bargain - I had expected any change between the two to be in the axles not the gearbox. So now I have a 'cruising' speed of 50mph instead of 60 !!!
Right - so I think we can all agree that the fault must now lie on the electronic side. So here is my question - Is the auto gearbox controlled by the ECU (mounted on the side of the passenger footwell)? and does anyone have a spare one available?
Oh - any other ideas welcome. By the way, Toyota dealer reported the ECU showing no faults - but I'm guessing that means no ENGLISH faults!!

        Thanks in anticipation

        Kev

I Am almost 100% certain on the 3.0 the Main ECU controls the transmission.

Most toyota dealers wont touch the diagnostics because of the regional variations ( though strangely some independants seem to have the right kit to do so)

May help ,It may not but try this link!

Hi i had a simalar problem a while ago.I put the surf into a autogearbox specalist and it took them two week to find that a wire from the ECU to one of the solinoids on the gearbox was shorting out so the had to by pass this with a new wire.

yeah my problem is slightly different as most of the time i cant reverse despit revving the engine and sometimes it reverses as if in a high range gear state, wierd

ive checked brakes etc greased the prop nshaft and had it up so i can see everything is free so im thinkin its either the box or the transfer case (which i have purchased) but i cant find anyone to help me with it and 9im not that confident of doing it myself as ive been told that changing the box involves removing the engine, and i aint got hoists and stuff.

If its only doing it in reverse then it could be the reverse gear band slipping or the solinoid is sticking . A transmission fluid flush first may cure the problem .
I dought the transfer box will be the cause. It only changes the drive from gearbox and splits it to the props and alter from hi to low.
