  • EGR mod

I'm considering fitting a blanking plate in the EGR pipework as mentioned elsewhere on this forum.

Will blocking off the EGR pipe improve fuel economy or is it simply to stop the black smoke? I guess that the volume of recycled exhaust gases will be replaced by air once the valve is blocked and thus there'll be more air in the combustion mix. Or would the engine simply add more of the existing fuel/air mixture thus meaning more fuel used but with more bang on each stroke? If that were the case would it make the Surf more responsive or have any effect, positive or negative on the economy?

Does anyone have any before & after comparisons on power, economy and performance? I have a 1993 2.4 SSRX if that makes any difference.

    Cheers,
    Dan

Do a search for Cable Tie and Ball Bearings - no need to make up and fit a blanking plate

PS do NOT buy the ^%&& ball bearing off fleabay !

I just stuffed a screw downt the end of the pipe! I think it feels a bit more responsive when warm, but then again it could just be in my mind, as I wanted it to!?

Blanking plate is the safest bet. If your valve is stuck open, as mine appeared
to be, at least you know it can't still feed that gunk back into the engine.

Mine was stuck a little open so I had to solid blank it off.
After my lastest play around I am in the process of removing it altogether.

I like the idea of ripping it all out like Simon but I'm not brave enough yet. I'll probably try the ball bearing trick or possibly the full blanking plate if I can find the time.

            Ta for your comments folks.

All you need is a cable tie.

If I remember correctly I have no EGR due to a failure last year, so Tony just took the whole lot out.Haven't noticed any difference at all, but it appears I can do whatever I want to the motor, and it still returns same fuel and power.
Now what was it I keep reading about intercoolers!!!

Thanks for the photo Vince - makes it nice and idiot proof (important with me around).

Does anyone have any idea how to tell if the cable tie trick has worked? I notice from a few threads that some EGR valves become stuck partially or fully open. If that were the case then I guess the blanking plate would be needed.

Is there a reasonably simple way to disassemble the EGR valve to check the valve is closed?

                  Cheers.
