  • clutch slip

This may be a simple one but just want to see what you guys think. Truck is a 2.4 1994 pickup 2WD, many miles. The clutch is usually okay, perhaps if you dump it a bit quick when having to speed off from a junction it'll slip a bit, but lately it is doing it more. When the engine is fairly cold it's fine, but at the other end of a run (motorway) it is starting to let go on its own. Then later that day, engine cold again, seems fine till hot. Pedal action feels fine, need to let it out a long way till it bites though, have flushed out the fluid. Do I just get a new clutch or is there anything else I should know? Thanks!

Sounds like you need a new clutch plate.

You could try adjusting the clutch pedal free travel but I really think it's time for a new clutch. Could have rear main seal leak and oil on the clutch plate. Any signs of an oil leak around the bellhousing?

No signs of oil leak, thought about that too. Will read up on how to adjust play. When you say new clutch plate, you mean the plate with the friction lining I take it?

Correct. As you say that you have a long pedal travel, coupled with the slipping, means the friction lining has worn down to it's limit.

Nice one, thanks. So far nearly every job has turned out to be at least three tiems as complicated as it appeared at first...

If you leave the worn clutch for to long you may damage the flywheel as the friction material has rivets to hold it on and these can wear into the flywheel as well as crack the flywheel due to excessive heat created when clutch slips .
